You might have noticed that I’m a huge fan of final girl, the solo board game of horror. The game offers lots of content, but if you’re looking for a change of pace I’ve got you covered with 15 games recommended for Final Girl Fans.
Note: I have a video version of this article on youtube, if streamed content is more your thing than reading:
Today we’ll be mostly looking at Solo board games, with medium complexity. I’ve tried to include a variety of genres in there to keep things fresh.
First let me get a few “obvious” recommendations out of the way: If you like final girl, you might want to grab some of the expansions you don’t have yet, there are ten to choose from at the moment, and they provide a variety of gameplay. There’s also Hostage Negotiator by the same designer, with a very similar gameplay but a different theme.
Now that these low hanging fruits are accounted for, let’s go!
15 – Apex Theropod Deck Building Game: Collected Edition (2020)
Apex Theropod is a deckbuilding game. You play as a species of Dinosaur, and you have to ensure your species survives the brutal environment until you become the Apex predator. The game can accomodate up to 6 players, but everybody recommends it solo. A great game, if you can find a copy for a reasonable price.
You might also like: People who like Apex Theropod also recommend Astro Knights, Too Many Bones, and Veilwraith
14 – Cthulhu: Death May Die (2019)
In number 14, we have Cthuluh, Death May Die. The original aspect of this Lovecraft game is that as investigators, you are this time actively trying to summon the elder Gods, in order to be able to destroy them. The game plays in under 2 hours and has great table presence. It obviously has a horror theme, so it might work well for you if you like Final Girl.
Set a watch is an adventure game where you have to visit and clear out nine locations, by battling monsters. The game plays great solo, has lots of strategy, luck mitigation, beautiful components, plays fast, and is quite underrated.
You might also like: For more Star Wars games, have a look at Outer Rim and Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game. Wrath of the Lich King is another great recommendation For another take on the Pandemic gameplay.
11 – Adventure Tactics: Domianne’s Tower (2021)
Adventure Tactics: Domianne’s Tower is a campaign game of tactical combat, that plays great solo or for a family game night. It is a bit less complex than other dungeon crawlers out there, which might be for you if you like Final Girl’s medium complexity.
You might also like: People who like Domianne’s tower also recommend Return to Dark Tower, Sanctum and Townsfolk Tussle.
10 – ISS Vanguard (2022)
ISS Vanguard a science fiction game of space exploration by Awaken Realms. It’s an Epic adventure for 1 to 4 players, and people heavily recommend it solo, in particular if you’re a fan of sci fi. This is one of the most heavy weight games in this selection, if you’re looking for something a bit meatier after Final Girl.
You might also like: For more games with big campaigns, have a look at Oathsworn, Etherfields, and Frosthaven.
9 – Horizons of Spirit Island (2022)
Horizons of Spirit Island is a lighter weight version of Spirit Island. You play as gods who have to protect an island from invaders. The game is very tactical in terms of deck building and resource management. Because it is “smaller” in scope than its older brother, it is also easier to bring to the table.
You might also like: For more solo games with uncommon gameplay mechanics, have a look at Super-Skill Pinball, Spire’s End: Hildegard, and Vagrantsong,
6 – Lands of Galzyr (2022)
Lands of Galzyr is a game of adventure and exploration, with very cute critters for its protagonists. Like Final girl, it puts a strong emphasis on the narrative aspect, trying to make you experience more than just gameplay. I also has some legacy aspects to it, with a persistent world and consequences of your actions having an impact on future game sessions.
Vengeance Roll and Fight is an action roll and write game. Its solo mode, in which you are battling against a boss and his mobs, has received lots of praises. The dice rolling and battle against a boss is not unlike Final girl, but this game adds a realtime element, which you might or might not like.
You might also like: For more roll and write, check out Vengeance Roll and fight episode 2 and Twilight Inscription. So, You’ve Been Eaten is also a nice recommendation.
4 – Under Falling Skies (2020)
[generated]Under Falling skies is an exclusively solo game, in which you have to repel Alien invaders before they destroy earth. It’s a mix of action and brain puzzle involving dice placement, with short game sessions of 20 to 30 minutes. It has a similar complexity and game time as Final Girl, and there’s a free Pritn and Play version if you want to give it a try.
3 – Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – The Game (2022)
The Dark Knight Returns is a tabletop adaptation of Frank Miller’s popular comic book. It has a 4 scenario campaign, which might feel a bit short, but like Final girl, the game is extremely thematic and is well worth it if you’re fan of the Franchise.
You might also like: More solo games with popular franchises include the G.I. JOE Deck-Building Game, and for more Batman check Shadow of the Bat,
2 – Warp’s Edge (2020)
[generated]Warp’s Edge is an action bag builder, exclusively solo, in which you have to defeat a powerful enemy with your spaceship. It is a nice brain puzzle with a nice theme change from the horror of Final Girl.
You might also like: Other great solo games you might want to try include Maquis, One Deck Dungeon, and Unbroken.
1 – Wreckland Run (2022)
Finally in number one we have Wreckland Run, a Mad-max kind of game in which you have to equip your car with defenses and weapons, to defeat enemy vehicles. The game is exclusively solo and comes with a 7 chapter campaign. If you like Wreckland run, also check The Ratcatcher and One Deck Galaxy.
And this is it for my list of games you might like if you enjoy final girl, as always don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments if some recommendations feel off, or if I missed some cool games. Thanks and see you next time!
